Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about acupuncture? You're not alone. Here are answers to the most common questions I hear from new patients.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people find acupuncture surprisingly comfortable—even relaxing! The needles I use are extremely fine, about the width of a human hair. They're much thinner than needles used for injections or blood draws.
You may feel a brief sensation when a needle is inserted—sometimes described as a tiny pinch or tingling—but this quickly fades. Once the needles are in place, many patients feel deeply relaxed. It's not uncommon for people to fall asleep during treatment!
If you're nervous about needles, please let me know. We can start slowly and make sure you're comfortable every step of the way.
How many treatments will I need?
This is the question everyone wants answered, and the honest answer is: it depends on your unique situation.
Acute conditions (recent injuries, sudden onset symptoms): Often respond quickly, typically within 3-6 treatments
Chronic conditions (long-standing pain, ongoing health issues): Usually require more time, often 8-12+ treatments to see significant improvement
Wellness and prevention: Many patients come monthly for ongoing maintenance once their initial concerns are resolved
Several factors influence how quickly you'll respond to treatment:
- How long you've had the condition
- Your overall health and energy levels
- How well you follow through with lifestyle recommendations
- Whether you're managing stress and getting adequate rest
During your first visit, we'll discuss a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs and goals. Some patients see improvement after just one session, while others notice gradual changes over time.
The good news? Most people start feeling better within the first few weeks of treatment.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your initial consultation is about getting to know you and understanding your health from a Chinese medicine perspective.
Here's how it works:
Health History (15-20 minutes): We'll discuss your current concerns, health history, medications, lifestyle, sleep, digestion, stress levels, and more. I'll ask detailed questions you might not expect—like about your sleep quality or whether you prefer warm or cold weather. These help me understand your unique constitution.
Diagnosis (10-15 minutes): I'll check your pulse (it tells me a lot in Chinese medicine!) and look at your tongue. These are traditional diagnostic tools that help me identify patterns of imbalance in your body.
Treatment Plan: Based on everything we've discussed, I'll explain my assessment and outline a recommended treatment approach.
First Acupuncture Treatment (30-40 minutes): You'll lie comfortably on a treatment table while I insert very fine needles at specific points. Most people find this deeply relaxing. I'll leave you to rest for 20-30 minutes, often with gentle music. Many patients describe feeling like they're floating or in a meditative state.
Total Time: Plan for 90 minutes for your first visit.
What to Bring:
- List of current medications and supplements
- Any relevant medical records (if you have them)
- Loose, comfortable clothing
- An open mind and any questions you have!
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up to access your arms and legs. I'll need to access points on your lower legs, arms, and sometimes your back, so athletic wear or comfortable casual clothes work well.
Good options:
- Loose pants that roll above the knee
- T-shirt or top with sleeves that roll up
- Athletic shorts (for some treatments)
Avoid:
- Tight jeans or restrictive clothing
- One-piece outfits that can't be adjusted
- Strong perfumes or scented lotions (some patients are sensitive)
You'll remain mostly clothed during treatment. I provide blankets for warmth and comfort, and I always ensure your privacy and dignity.
What should I expect after treatment?
Everyone responds differently to acupuncture, but here are the most common experiences:
Immediately After:
- Deep relaxation and calm
- Feeling pleasantly tired or drowsy
- Mental clarity and improved mood
- Reduced pain or tension
Within 24-48 Hours:
- Continued improvement in symptoms
- Better sleep that night
- Increased energy (though some people feel tired for a day as the body heals)
- Occasionally, symptoms may temporarily intensify before improving (this is called a "healing response" and is actually a good sign that your body is shifting).
Tips for After Treatment:
- Drink plenty of water to help your body process the treatment
- Avoid strenuous exercise for a few hours
- Listen to your body—rest if you're tired
- Pay attention to changes, even subtle ones
If you have any concerns after treatment, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to answer questions between appointments.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, when performed by a licensed, trained professional. I am a California licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.), nationally certified (NCCAOM), and hold a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) degree.
Safety practices I follow:
- Only sterile, single-use, disposable needles
- Proper needle depth and technique
- Clean treatment environment
- Thorough health screening to identify any contraindications
Side effects are rare and typically mild:
- Minor bruising at needle sites (occasional)
- Temporary soreness
- Light-headedness (uncommon)
- Temporary increase in symptoms as the body adjusts
When to avoid or modify acupuncture:
- If you're pregnant (certain points are avoided)
- If you have a pacemaker (some electrical stimulation techniques may be contraindicated)
- If you're taking blood thinners (we'll use fewer needles and adjust technique)
I always take a thorough health history to ensure acupuncture is safe and appropriate for you.
Do you accept insurance?
I am an out-of-network provider, which means I do not bill insurance directly. However, I can provide you with a detailed "superbill" (itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
Many insurance plans cover acupuncture when you see out-of-network providers. I recommend calling your insurance company to ask about:
- Out-of-network acupuncture coverage
- Reimbursement percentage
- Deductible requirements
- Number of covered sessions per year

Can acupuncture replace my other medical care?
Acupuncture works beautifully alongside conventional medicine as part of an integrative approach to health. Encourage open communication between all your healthcare providers.
In some conditions, acupuncture may reduce your need for certain medications or interventions—but never discontinue any prescribed treatments without consulting your physician. I will work collaboratively with your other providers to ensure you receive the best comprehensive care.
Many of my patients use acupuncture to:
- Reduce reliance on pain medications
- Support conventional treatments for chronic conditions
- Managing side effects of medical treatments
- Enhance overall wellness and prevention
If you're under care for a serious medical condition, I recommend discussing acupuncture with your doctor. Most physicians are supportive, especially given the growing body of research on acupuncture's effectiveness.
What's your cancellation policy?
Life happens, and I understand that sometimes you need to reschedule. I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or change your appointment.
Why? When you book a time slot, that time is reserved specifically for you. Last-minute cancellations mean I can't offer that time to other patients who need care.
Cancellation Policy:
- 24+ hours notice: No charge, free to reschedule
- Less than 24 hours notice: You will be charged the full appointment fee
- No-shows: Full appointment fee will be charged
Exceptions: I understand that emergencies and illness happen. Please call me if you have an extenuating circumstance.
